Nonviolence United wishes Gandhi a happy birthday. Mohandas Gandhi, the revolutionary mind who introduced mass Active Nonviolence to the world, was born on October 2, 1869. Many may first come to know Gandhi through his call to us -- "We must become the change we want to see." On Gandhi's birthday, please take the time to truly reflect on what he meant. Think about how every action, every purchase, every choice made in the past built the world we live in today. And remember that every choice being made today will build the future. And think about the world as you wish it could be -- the change you want to see -- how would you act; what would you eat; how would you interact with your fellow travelers? The answers and even the questions can be transformative. At every turn and with every moment, each of us has the chance to be that change, to make our lives better and to make the world a better place for everyone. This October 2, introduce a friend to Gandhi's teachings and introduce them to the power of Nonviolence. You might enjoy the many resources we found about Gandhi at Gandhi-Manibhavan.com.
Article/Lecture: Nonviolence -- Try This At Home
A fellow Nonviolence United collaborator sent us the link to an article from a fun website that advocates simplicity -- making your own "stuff," "re-gifting," "composting for the lazy," "guides for thrift store shopping" and much, much more. The article gives a few nice tips for avoiding burn-out, finding solace in a sometimes difficult world, simplifying your life and a gentle reminder that Nonviolence is ACTIVE not passive. Read How To Be Nonviolent Tips for the Home Front at SuperNaturale.com. Oh, and it's Gandhi's birthday -- why not re-gift to a friend that great Nonviolence book you read.
Leaders Are Readers: What Would Gandhi Read?
We've said it before and we'll say it again, "Leaders are readers." Turn off the TV (or better yet, give it away) and pick up a book on Nonviolence at your local library. The ideas of the masters still ring true today. This month in keeping with wishing Gandhi a happy birthday, we thought you might be interested to know what books Gandhi read on his long and powerful path of Active Nonviolence. We found this extensive list of "Books Read by Gandhi" at Gandhi-Manibhavan.com. Pick one, dive into it and let us know what you find. Remember, if you want to order books, consider buying them from your local bookstore or online with BookSense.com -- your online source for local bookstores.
Practicing Nonviolence: Tell The World About Nonviolence United
The other day one of our fellow collaborators wearing a home-printed "Nonviolence United" t-shirt at a Dalai Lama speaking event was approached and asked, "What does Nonviolence United do?" Would you know how to respond? If you have a few minutes perhaps you would. But are you able, in 10 seconds or less, to pique the interest of those who ask and set them on the path of discovery? Try this response on for size, “We're teaching people how Active Nonviolence can build a better life for them and a better world for everyone.” Get the conversation going, make a friend and send them to NonviolenceUnited.org. Let's spread the word!
