Article: Using Anger Effectively With Nonviolence

Nonviolence -- The Only Hope
By Dr. Arun Gandhi

While Thich Nhat Hanh goes into great detail on the nature of anger, Gandhi reminds us that we don’t have to strive to eliminate anger from our lives. Instead, it is more important to transform our anger and find creative and Nonviolent ways of using that vital energy/emotion.

Interestingly, when anger is used Nonviolently and effectively, it can make us less angry, more focused, and more effective. This doesn’t mean we won’t continue to be outraged at systems gone horribly wrong. It’s just that through Nonviolence, we are better able to maintain hope and sustain activism.

We thought you might enjoy the inclusion of anger in this short article by Arun Gandhi, Mohandas Gandhi’s grandson and founder of The Gandhi Institute.

Leaders Are Readers: "The Power of Nonviolence" by Richard Gregg

The Power of Nonviolence by Richard B. Gregg is a must read explanation of Nonviolence.
Richard Gregg, an American philosopher and social justice advocate, studied under Gandhi and coined the term Voluntary Simplicity.

He brilliantly translates the concepts of Gandhian Nonviolence into an easy-to-follow "Western" understanding.

Read it to fully appreciate why Nonviolence works and why it is so important for us to train and practice. If you have limited time and are looking for a short cut -- read chapters 2, 3, 4, 10 and 11 for now.

It's hard to find, so check your libraries, used bookstores and online. And pass used copies on to friends and libraries.

We've also made it available online at NonviolenceUnited.org!

Practicing Nonviolence: Food For Thought

Think of all the connections you're making every time you eat. Where did the packaging come from if any? Who picked every coffee bean, every tea leaf or every strawberry by hand? Was the sun shining that day? Was the worker tired or hot? How far did each bite travel to get from the field to your mouth? Were there chemicals dumped on your food and on the field workers or is each bite clean and nutritious? Did animals have to give up their freedom, families and lives for the meal or are you enjoying a plant-based meal? Was there anything wasted -- grain, energy, water? Is the small farmer smiling thinking of you? Are you smiling thinking of her?

Words To Live By: "Is It Right?"

"Cowardice asks the question, "Is it safe?" Expediency asks the question, "Is it politic?" And Vanity asks the question, "Is it popular?" But Conscience asks the question "Is it right?" And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must do it because Conscience tells him it is right." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

About Nonviolence United

Our mission is to see the world become a just home for all -- no more wars, no more hunger, no more suffering of one for the greed of another.

It can be done. And there is a remarkable way to make it happen. A way that builds rather than tears down. A way that allows you to live your ethics rather than selling your soul. A way where everyone is loved and no one is hated. A way that fills you with hope. A way that cannot be stopped and can never be destroyed.

Our Strategy

  1. Recognize “economic non-cooperation” (along with the cooperation with good industries and services) as a powerful Nonviolent means of advancing social justice
  2. Organize and unite the social justice movements within this strategy
  3. Quickly spread this strategy to the people via the social justice movements

Thank you!

Nonviolence United exists through the kindness and generosity of caring people like you. Please support our ongoing efforts to promote Nonviolence as a way of life and as a way of social change.
